Art for fun is the second part of a project whose aim is to explore the ways humour is used in contemporary art. Our first approach materialised a year ago with Empieza el juego (the game starts), a collective show for La Casa Encendida in Madrid. We based our assumptions on the fact that a lot of humour used in contemporary art was the result of certain artistic attitude, a favourable state of mind that persuaded artists to produce a particular kind of works in a certain way. Before we actually outlined the project, we discovered artists that far to identifying with the “genius-creative” figure, where known for having a subversive and relational attitude which brought together art, life and play. On one hand, their stance was subversive since it did not conform with the canons of productivity by which we rate individuals in our capitalist system. On the other hand, their position was relational in terms of their great capacity to connect with the spectator and transform him into an ally, that is to say, a co-player.
Art for fun shows a selection of eight artists who share the same attitude, but who on this occasion expand the scope of their playing activities. Before we were interested in the artist’s playful attitude and in his work as consequence of play, but now our interest focuses on those works in which the spectator becomes the protagonist through play, compelling to evolve from being a mere spectator to a participant. This is the reason why all the selected works for this exhibition are incomplete. They are works that artists consider that they need the participation of a spectator in order to be completed. Play and creativity expand so that not only the artist can enjoy it, but everyone. Our aim is to transform the art centre into a space where knowledge is conveyed through play, a place where contemplation gives way to experience.
